July letter from the Chairman of White Colne Parish Council

I hope you are enjoying the White Colne summer. With Wimbledon and the World Cup behind us and as I write this the first rain for ages, you might be forgiven for thinking the summer is over but not so in White Colne. The Olympics come to our village this month with a fun day including the 2km walk or crawl at your own pace (its not a race I am told) and then back by popular demand our pub is back for the night. There will be plenty of local drinks to enjoy and a barbecue. More details are shown below. So I do hope you can join the rest of our village and make it the event of the White Colne Summer.

Kevin Nolan

Chairman, White Colne PC

Neighbourhood Watch

Shed Burglaries
There have been four recent thefts from sheds in Gosfield, Gestingthorpe, Little Henny and Great Henny plus an orange Husquarna tractor and an unpainted Ifor Williams trailer (both estaimated to be worth £2500 each) have been stolen from properties in Great Henny and Little Henny respectively. Braintree District Crime Reduction Advisor Stephen Armson-Smith recommends that everyone marks all their gardening equipment in a highly visible manner either by engraving or using permanent security marker to show postcode and house number or name. Sheds should be securely locked with bolts that cannot be prised off. Larger tools and items such as bikes and lawn mowers can be chained to a shed shackle on the wall. Approved security products can be seen on websites:
www.soldsecure.com or www.securedbydesign.com

'Kick Out The Cowboys'

Buy With Confidence only recommends businesses which have been vetted and approved by Essex Trading Standards. Whether you need a builder, a mechanic, a taxi company or financial services you'll find them on

50 Club News

Sadly it has been decided to bring the 50 Club to an end after many years of being a vehicle to create funds for the community by the community and financial help has been given to many village projects that we have enjoyed and in many respects continue to do so.

There are several reasons for closing the club not least that times move on and this type of fund raising does not carry the support that it once did, never the less we should all be pleased with what has been achieved over the ages. Funds still need to be raised within the community particularly now that it is expected that grant aid will be hard to come by over the next few years. Already it will be seen that activities are happening to gather funds from other sources and it is hoped that every villager will become involved in these not least that apart from raising cash it gives everyone the chance to meet those who we live with at a time in our lives when things are tough and the community spirit will help us all

A specific letter is being addressed to current members of the club explaining the winding up procedure being suggested, but this opportunity is taken to thank everyone for the support given

Speed sign Kills electricity.

Monday 12th July - EDF have finally tracked down the fault that has left much of White Colne without electricity at various times over the weekend and resulted in generators been installed throughout the village.

It appears that the post for the speed indicator device near Chalkney Garage has damaged the underground power cable. The charge for the generators and the repair work (about £15,000) will be therefore sent to Highways, sadly another drain on our local taxes.

News about the land at the rear of the hall

(former goods yard)

You will all be aware that we have been negotiating with ECC for many years to secure the tenure of the village hall. At the last meeting of the PC we discussed ECC’s submission of an outline planning application to provide 5 houses. An outline application means that final details of the style, design and size of the buildings can be decided at a later date. The PC’s response to this application can be read in the minutes on page 5 of this Newsletter.

We have now heard that the application has been withdrawn by ECC. The Historic Buildings and Conservation Office (an ECC department) has asked for refusal on quite a few points as the land lies adjacent to the Conservation Area.

If you want to read their full report it can be found on BDC web site, under planning applications, reference 10/00605.

The PC will be discussing the implications in open forum at our meeting on July 19th, and it is hoped our chartered surveyor, Mr David Smith of Percivals will also be in attendance to give advice and answer any questions. Please attend if you can.

Concrete spillage on Bures Road.

Highways inspected this on 14/07/2010. They report that the concrete has spilled and set on the road near to the junction with Colchester Road. The rangers will clear that small section of road by scraping off the concrete..(Job No 331). This will be done in due course but obviously with other jobs taking a priority a date cannot be pin pointed as to when of when the works will take place.
