THE WHITE COLNE OLYMPIC CHALLENGE

White Colne held its own 'Olympic' event on 24th July to celebrate that there's just two years to go until the 2012 Olympics in London. This was a countrywide initiative where councils were encouraged to involve their local communities in sports events by way of grant funding.

On a perfect summer's day, various events were organised on a sporting/leisure theme which included a 2km walk led by Glen Moore, table tennis, petanque and darts competitions and a sporting trivia quiz. A barbecue was provided by a butcher from West Mersea - he sends his apologies for the late start! The main attraction of the day was the transformation once again of the village hall into the 'Stationmaster's Arms'. This followed hot on the heels of the Village Design Statement event in May when a similar experiment to turn the village hall into a pub proved to be very successful It was estimated that during the day up to 150 villagers turned up and the general feedback was that a good time was had by all.

Congratulations to the winners of the competitions: Table Tennis - Dennis Webster, Darts - Gary Webster, Petanque - Kevin Nolan , Mark Adlem and seven year old Sam Adams, Sports Quiz - the McHale family. Also well done to James Adams and Alex Adlem for winning the children's table tennis and darts competitions respectively.

A big thank you to everybody who supported the event and to those who helped on the day especially Sue & Graham Newman and Richard Gourlay for their endurance in running the petanque and darts competitions which went on late into the night - full marks to Sue for her improvised floodlight! Thank you also to the hard working bar staff and washer-uppers for keeping the thirsty punters served and the glasses replenished, to Jane and Peter Blowers for the loan of their bar and to Mitch at the Thatcher's for setting up and supplying the beer.

In conjunction with Trafalgar Day celebrations, the 'Stationmaster's Arms' will open again on 23rd October - don't forget to put the date in your diary!
