The new project for our village hall

Since the Millennium a great deal of grant money has been used to improve and update our very special village hall. Volunteers have given hundreds of hours of their time; fund raising events have added value and we must not forget the considerable contribution made by the 50 Club over the years.

New windows, new doors, heating, lighting, new kitchen, new toilets, disabled toilet, flooring  and re-decoration – some of our achievements of which we should all be proud. However, there are still two areas to be tackled. One is the difficult problem of disabled access to the hall and the other is the renovation of the small committee room.

Consequently, after much thought, the hall committee  has proposed incorporating the committee room, the small lounge and the bistro area into the main hall thus making one much larger and far more user friendly room. The side door from the lounge, which at the moment is used during events to access the gazebo or petanque court will become the new disabled access. A percentage of the  load bearing walls will be removed, but we are lucky to have a  structural engineer living in White Colne, who will be working with us on the project. We believe we will be able to retain the unique character of the hall. A  simple plan showing the new layout is provided opposite.

Why do it? Firstly it would be very difficult to find any grants to fund the renovation of the committee room. Secondly, this room is under used and quite frankly, it is wasted space. Lastly, it has become more and more difficult to tailor our events to a small hall. With an enlarged hall there will be space to provide a fixed bar or counter giving  hirers a designated area for serving drinks. This will also mean of course that it will be  easier to set up our own pub nights, with  much less work for our volunteers. If you have been in the hall for quizzes, pub nights, or Christmas carol events to name just a few, we are sure you will remember how cramped it can be! Our ideas to stage a White Colne Olympic event in 2012, won’t need an Olympic standard hall but certainly would benefit from more space. Also needing space is the “big screen” idea, which will  bring the community together to watch  international sporting events.

We shall be working on grant applications over the next few months, with decisions being declared from the end of February onwards. Grant bodies need communities to prove their dedication to the project by providing a percentage of the monies through fund raising events.

Funds from the Trafalgar Pub, the Quiz night and the Carols will go towards this new venture so please support us.

We envisage the project should be completed by Spring 2012.

But now it’s over to you. If you would like to get involved in this project, in any way, now is your chance. If you haven’t been in the hall for a while, why not pop in on October 23rd?

We have had our own Big Society in White Colne for many years,

now it’s time for our hall to go…..  BIG!

Could you lend a hand for our pub event on 23rd October?

Below is a list of tasks which still need extra help. Have a look and see if you can give half an hour or so of your time.

FRIDAY 22nd OCTOBER:

2.30 - 4.00 pm   At the Village Hall, unload bar, fridge, drinks etc from van and set up as much of the pub as possible.

                                Weather permitting erect gazebo.

SATURDAY 23rd OCTOBER:

10.00 am   Erect gazebo if not done on Friday

2.00 - 4.00 pm   Set up main hall for pub (it's used by a dance group until 2.00 pm)

4.30 pm onwards   Petanque competition - we need somebody to run it

   4.00 - 10.45 pm   Collecting glasses and washing up. Suggested timings for rota: 4.00 - 6.00, 6.00 - 7.15, 7.15 - 9.00, 9.00 - 10.45.

If you can help with one of these sessions, perhaps you'd let me know which one you'd prefer to do - thanks.

10.30 - 11.15 pm   Clear bar, fridge, tables glasses etc to Committee Room and Lounge so that hall and kitchen are clear, ready for the Sunday

                               morning hirer.

SUNDAY 24thOCTOBER:

3.00 pm   Load van with bar, fridge drinks etc. Dismantle gazebo.

I think that we've got enough volunteers to run the front and back bars but, in case anyone has to cancel, are there any experienced bar staff (!) amongst you who might like to help?
