ECC Salt Bag Pilot Scheme

You will be aware that Colchester Road is routinely gritted in icy weather and following lobbying by the Parish Council about four years ago ECC Highways agreed for Bures Road to also be gritted when the vehicle is on its way to and from the depot.  However although we have one or two salt bins these are not routinely filled by ECC Highways so we have no additional reserves of salt if the necessity arises for roads and pavements to be treated in the village.

Although ECC have started the winter season with salt stocks at full capacity there are minimal reserves nationally so if this winter reflects last winter's and demand remains high, the Government will effectively have to ration stocks in the next few months.  ECC state that because salt bins have been misused in the past and salt stolen, they are embarking on a pilot scheme this winter where towns and villages are being offered a tonne of salt (with the option of another tonne if required) providing it is kept in a secure location.  This will be managed and distributed as required by a nominated volunteer within the community.  The Parish Council have expressed their interest and have asked questions about the logistics, safety and training involved on this scheme.

As part of the Government's 'Big Society' you will be aware that they are keen for communities to be proactive and undertake increased levels of self help so once we have more information we'll probably be asking if anyone would like to volunteer to help implement this plan
