the village hall project
In the last week of October we had a timely reminder about our reliance on electricity with most of the village without power for several days. Although not as destructive as the famous storm in 1987, this latest power cut robbed us not only of the means to cook, to heat and light our homes, but rendered all our modem communication devices totally useless with even mobile phone networks affected.
Coincidentally, the Parish Council had already started reviewing the Emergency Plan, which quickly proved ineffective, as we had no special "hot line" number to UK Power. Surely all Parish Clerks could have a dedicated number which would enable the sharing of information, and allow us to inform our residents in the quickest possible time? We did manage to contact some of our elderly residents and those living alone, and it was heartening to hear that neighbours were helping each other and doing all they could. There is always a worry that someone will be overlooked, and we will be addressing this problem at our next meeting.
Should we have a confidential village survey, with the results held by the Clerk and perhaps the Chairman? Is there a need for us to keep an emergency supply of camping gas cookers, wind up lights, torches, batteries, etc? Could we open the village hall, for hot drinks and food? Your thoughts and ideas are, as usual, very welcome, so please get in touch or come along to our meeting.

Local Bus & School Transport Consultation… Chris Pearcey
As most villagers who use the local bus services will be aware, Essex County Council (ECC) began a formal public consultation in mid September on the travel needs of Essex residents and the types of service most important to them. This has come about because next year ECC will be reviewing the levels of subsidy they provide for certain local bus and school bus services, which they maintain are unsustainable in the current financial climate. The School Transport consultation has already closed but for villagers who still wish to participate in the Local Bus review they have until Monday 9th December to complete the survey and can do so by logging on to www.essex.gov.uk/busreview.
The consultation is not looking at individual services at this stage, and there will be further opportunties to comment next year when the strategy is completed, but from a cursory look at the list of services on the website which ECC currently pay for, the following could be under review in White Colne:
Hedingham Service 83 -
Regal Busway Service 88 -
Hedingham Service 88 -
De Vere Service 327 -
Race Night, September 28th… Peter Norris
The Stationmaster’s Arms on September 28th saw the return of our popular Race Night. Over 60 residents and guests enjoyed a jacket potato supper and an exciting race programme. The racing alone raised just over £300 for village funds, with sponsorship from local businesses contributing a further £40. As well as thanking members of the events committee and other residents who helped organise the evening, special mention goes to Tony and Sally Dowsett from Great Baddow who gave their time to run the racing, to Mark for the loan of his audio/video equipment and to Sarah for many hours spent in the kitchen. Thanks also to our sponsors Leo Design, Print & Promotions (who also donated the printing of the race programme), Riverside Spice, CRP Carpentry and Pink Pig Boutique.
Speedwatch… John Watt
As reported last month, John is looking at restarting Speedwatch in White Colne. Anyone interested in joining him for an hour or two, once or twice a month, to help monitor and reduce traffic speeds through the village should contact him on 223582 or email email@example.com
Earls Colne Airfield… John Watt

An Apology… Events Committee
Due to unforeseen circumstances, unfortunately the Halloween Trick or Treat at the Village Hall on Thursday 31st October had to be cancelled. We were sorry to disappoint those of you who'd planned to come along and we hope to be able to run this event next year.

White Colne Wine Tasting Evening
On Saturday 25th January 2014 at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall

Main course Italian style chicken with a vegetarian option.
Limited stocks of the wines plus other drinks will be available to purchase after the tasting until closing at 10.30pm.
Last time, this proved an extremely popular and enjoyable evening. It will be a ticket only event, with tickets priced at £10, and numbers are limited so to make sure of your place book early by contacting Rita on 01787 221919 or by email firstname.lastname@example.org
Also please let her know your main course dietary requirements.
News from the Parish Church of
St Andrew’s White Colne
We are delighted that for the first time for some years
we will be having a combined Carol and Christingle Service
in our own Parish Church.
The service will be for all ages, babies to the elderly and everyone in between.
This will also be a great opportunity to meet our new Vicar, the Revd Captain Peter
Taylor who is looking forward to meeting everyone from the village. So why not come
along? The service will be at 5.00pm on Sunday 1st December, and if children of
any age bring along an orange they will be able to swap it for ????? -
Everybody is welcome.
You may also want to join us in our services leading up to, and at Christmas itself:
8th December Holy Communion at 10.30am
