"Adverse weather disrupting refuse and recycling collections" from BDC
6 January 2010
Despite
the best efforts of our crews, the bad weather has meant that they have been unable
to collect refuse and recycling in some areas, as scheduled. Driving conditions for
very large vehicle are treacherous and even more so when having to avoid parked vehicles.
Our
priority will be to complete collections as quickly as possible, but please bear
in mind that there are likely to be further delays as the week progresses if the
bad weather continues.
Our message to residents is: PLEASE CONTINUE TO LEAVE YOUR
BINS OUT AND WE WILL GET TO YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
As soon as we know the situation
tomorrow, we will be sending out an update.
Kind regards
Cllr Roger Walters

ESSEX TAKING STEPS TO KEEP ROAD NETWORK MOVING
Essex County Council is revising its gritting programme this weekend to ensure that the county is kept moving in light of prolonged winter conditions.
In order to ensure that all major routes can be kept clear during the working week, Essex’s fleet of 65 winter gritters will be operating on a reduced precautionary network on Friday (8th) and Saturday (9th) evening.
The reduced network includes all ‘A’ roads, some ‘B’ roads and other additional roads serving larger towns and villages, as well as access roads to major hospitals, fire and ambulance stations.
Gritters will return to treating the full precautionary network on Sunday evening (10th), so that all major routes are cleared in time for the start of a new working week.
The decision has been taken following latest forecasts which predict that the cold weather will continue over the weekend and into next week. The government has announced steps to control the national distribution of salt, so it is imperative that Essex manages remaining supplies carefully.
County Councillor Norman Hume, Cabinet Member for Highways & Transportation said: “Revising our gritting programme is a decision that I have taken extremely seriously. We appreciate that residents still need to get around the county during the weekend, but we must prioritise our service to keep Essex moving while the icy conditions remain.
“We started this winter from our strongest ever position in terms of readiness for these severe conditions with the highest ever levels of winter salt in stock. Our gritters and crews have been out night and day for three weeks treating 1800 miles of Essex’s primary network plus hundreds more miles of high footfall areas.
“We have been receiving fresh supplies of salt and will continue to take operational decisions to maximise the benefits of winter gritting on our roads and footpaths for our residents. I would like to ask the public to take special care on untreated roads, and continue to travel with extreme caution at this time.”
Essex County Council is constantly monitoring weather forecasts and supplies of salt, with further operational decisions being taken as required.

Recycling and Refuse crews resumed collections today with a priority
to catch up with any scheduled collections not completed this week. Crews will work
over the weekend, weather permitting, to enable them to catch up with the regular
schedule. We have rescheduled this week’s collections -
Please bear
with us, as the icy conditions are making it difficult to access estate roads and
other minor roads around the District. If you are still awaiting a collection this
week, please continue to leave your bins out and we will get to them as soon as possible.

Are you litter picking?
I know we should be able to rely on our District Council to keep our streets clean
but sometimes this is an almost impossible task given the thoughtless nature of some
members of the public who continue to besmirch our village with discarded litter.
There are a few residents who, like me, try to keep their patch of White Colne free
of litter so I have taken delivery of a supply of purple sacks from Braintree District
Council (BDC) to be used for this purpose. I am reliably informed that these sacks
will be collected by BDC during their fortnightly collection of non recyclable rubbish
from the grey bins.
If anybody requires a supply of purple sacks please call Chris Pearcey on 221919
and I'll deliver them to you. Of course for any large items of litter or to report
fly-

Village Hall Thanks
The Hall Committee and the Parish Council would like to thank Doreen and Owen Bourne for all their hard work over many years keeping our village hall clean and tidy. We know it is often a thankless task; Doreen and Owen would often arrive like good fairies early in the morning, leaving the hall spick and span, ready for our next hirers. Thank you so much.
We are pleased to announce that we have been able to appoint a new cleaner following our advert in the November News
The Village Hall – latest news
The project for renovating the toilets in the village hall has now been completed. The old toilets were completely removed and the whole area was redesigned by Peter Norris with the result that we now have a separate toilet for the disabled fully complying with the regulations applicable to them. We have in addition separate ladies and gents units all with new fixtures and fittings with special easy clean floor coverings. Quite a large amount of work was carried out by volunteers which included tiling all areas with the result that within what seemed to be a very confined area we now have very bright and modern toilets in the hall. The cost was high and in excess of £18,000 and we were only able to obtain grant funding to the extent of £5,000. The rest of the money has come from accumulated earnings from the hire of the hall, the 50 club and the Parish Council. In this day and age we need to maintain a good standard to attract hirers and with the new kitchen and toilets and the nearly completed redecoration of the entrance lobby we have a hall to be proud of within our small village.
Anyone wishing to use the hall facilities, which is suitable for many types of functions should contact Jean Armstrong 01787 221811
Colneford Hill Wall
As most residents will have noticed our brand new wall on Colneford Hill has suffered damage on three separate occasions; the last and most serious being on 15th December. This is all very demoralising for both us here in the village and for ECC ( Highways) who carried out an excellent repair and it is all the more galling because the new wall has been badly damaged before the whole job was even completed.
We are convinced that the damage was caused by the tailgate of HGVs or transporters turning right up Colne Park Road when approaching the junction from the Colchester direction. Can we therefore again ask residents, and their visitors, not to park on Colne Park Road within fifty feet of the junction in order to give these large vehicles as much room as possible to negotiate the junction. This may help to prevent further damage to the wall and Green.
ECC will carry out the necessary repairs as soon as they are able.
