Advice to Neighbourhood Watch Groups

Criminal damage.

There have been a few motor vehicles which have had criminal damage in Braintree Town in the last few days.

The first involved offences concentrated in the local areas to the Town during last Thursday to Sunday.

Vehicles were scratched and one had graffiti and some vehicles have their tyres punctured.

If possible can owners park their vehicles in their garage/drive.

Please ensure alarms are used and parked in a lit area where possible.

Police are working hard to target offenders.

Should anyone see any suspicious activity around vehicles they are to call their local Neighbourhood Policing Teams or 999 if appropriate.

There is an Emergency text service for the d/deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired.

Instead of ringing 999 in an emergency, you can text a message to 07624 800 102 and receive a similar priority service.  However, members of the public MUST register to use the service, which is designed for those who are d/deaf-an all-encompassing term to denote everyone with a hearing –related disability and /or speech–impaired.

Please note that to use the service you must live, work or travel within Essex.

Anyone wishing to register for the emergency text service can do so by filling in a form online-visit www.essex.police.uk and click on Text Messaging link How to Contact us on the front page.

You can phone Essex Police switchboard on 0300 333 4444 and ask for an emergency text registration form.

Theft of tools and metal

Can those who have commercial vehicles which have tools/metal items relating to their business consider taking them inside a secured property overnight to avoid them being targeted.  Metal continues to be valuable, so please remove any scrap metal out of sight, particularly over night.

Theft of Motor Vehicles

There has been a trend of Ford Fiestas stolen from car parks in the Witham Area, particularly in the vicinity of the Railway Station during the day time and weekdays.  Please ensure your car in locked, visible and leave nothing in display.  Use an alarm if you have one.

ATM Skimming

If you use a cash point, please ensure there are no suspicious looking devices on the area where you place your card.  If you suspect anything, do not use the cash point and inform the bank.  This is infrequent, but please be observant.

If you have any further questions about any of the above, please contact:

To the Chairman of all Parish & Town Councils

Dear Chairman

Changes to the Refuse and Recycling Collection Service – Food Waste Collections

I am pleased to inform you that the District Council’s recycling performance in 2008/9 was 45.04% which puts us in third place in the County.  This is an excellent achievement that clearly reflects the support from residents with the Council’s recycling initiatives.

As you know, the Council is keen to improve recycling performance still further and to supplement the roll-out of wheeled bins into rural areas in October this year, we are making a further change to the service that will enable residents to recycle even more of their waste through the inclusion of raw and cooked food waste in the green bin.

It is estimated that food waste makes up nearly 30% of the waste in the grey bin which is sent to landfill. Organic waste (such as food waste and green garden waste) is a source of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas which contributes to climate change.  The new collection scheme aims to divert this waste from landfill by composting it instead.

The new scheme will be introduced as follows:-

· All households with wheeled bins will receive a kitchen caddy and instruction leaflet during September this year. The caddy is supplied so that residents can conveniently collect food waste before transferring it to the green bin.

· Householders will be encouraged to separate all their food waste including fish, meat and bones (cooked and uncooked) and put it in their green wheeled bin for collection on green bin days along with their garden waste.

· The new service will commence from 28 September 2009.

The scheme is being supported through our work with Essex County Council and consequently it will now be possible to maintain the green waste collection service all year round to meet customer expectations.

The Council’s Recycling Team are available to provide help and support to residents on all aspects of recycling and can be contacted via our Customer Services Centre on 01376 552525 or csc@braintree.gov.uk.

Over the past few months I have attended a number of Parish Council meetings and would like to thank you for working with the Council to promote recycling.

Yours faithfully

Advice to Neighbourhood Watch Groups

Burglary.

In the past few weeks there have been a number of sheds which have been targeted, which have tools.

It is important for all those who have such items to take care with their specific tools, maybe by locking them in a secure garage or in their homes.

Each item could also have special identifying mark to relate to the owner by the following methods:-

- Engraving or etching is suitable for many hard surfaces and can be done using an electric engraving tool or hand engraver. This method leaves a visible and permanent mark.

- Ultraviolet (UV) pens can put an invisible mark on your property, which can be seen by using a UV lamp. Only use UV marking when other methods would reduce the value of the object. The mark can fade in time, especially when exposed to sunlight, and can be washed off so you need to renew it regularly.

- Punching. You can mark heavier items, such as lawn mowers, with a hammer and a set of lunches.

- Keep a record of your property (sometimes photograph), paying special attention to any distinguishing marks.

Theft of Pedal Cycles

This is an ongoing problem across the district and therefore cyclists should take more effective in looking after their pedal cycles by not leaving them unattended or insecure. Please remind pedal cyclists you know to note the following:-

- Please do not leave your bicycle in isolated places.

- Always lock your bicycle (through the frame) when you leave it, even if it is only a short while.

- Lock the wheels too.

- Consider the use of proper cycle anchors.

- Finally remove smaller parts which cannot be secured especially quick release saddles.

- Consider having your bike post coded - contact Braintree Police Station

Pilot Street Light Scheme - this may affect you!

A pilot scheme has been taking place in the Maldon and Uttlesford districts for over 18 months whereby some street lights have been turned off at midnight for the remainder of the night. The Cabinet Member responsible for overseeing the pilot has now invited the Safer and Stronger Communities Policy and Scrutiny Committee ( a group of back bench members) to consider the issues arising from the pilot and put forward to him suggestions on what might happen in Essex in the future. This could include widening the scheme to the whole county, scrapping it or any alternative between the two. Issues to be looked at will include public safety, crime rates, the perception of crime, financial considerations and environmental concerns.

The Committee will be undertaking the scrutiny on Friday 18 September 2009. The Parish Council has been invited to submit evidence.

As we wish to reflect the opinion of residents,we need to receive your thoughts. So if you have an opinion about this, please email the Clerk or any councillor as soon as possible. Thank you

In the past week there have been a few occurrences of purse dipping in both the Braintree & Witham.

WITHAM: Newland Street

At around 12:30pm on August 22, an unknown suspect stole an elderly woman’s handbag with her purse inside, which contained cash and documents with an estimated total value of around £60, from her wheeled shopping buggy, in Newland Street, Witham.

BRAINTREE: .

1. At around 10:45am on August 22, an unknown suspect stole a woman’s purse, containing cash, cards and documents with an estimated total value of around £260, from her shopping bag which was by her feet, in Market Place, Braintree.

2. Between around 11:40am and 11:50am, an unknown suspect stole a woman’s purse, containing cash, cards and documents with an estimated total value of around £80, from her handbag which was on her shoulder, in Bank Street, Braintree.

The key things to remember to keep your valuables safe are:

Firstly, NEVER let your handbag out of your sight. Carry it in front of you – especially if you’re walking through a shop or a town centre.

Secondly, AVOID carrying large amounts of cash, and if your purse or wallet is in a bag, ensure that your bag is securely zipped up.

Thirdly, KEEP your purse or wallet safe at all times. Don’t leave it in your shopping basket, on restaurant or coffee tables, or on shop counters.

Theft can happen very quickly, and you may not notice you’ve been a victim until you next have to make a purchase.

Finally id someone knocks or bumps into you, check that they have not taken your purse or wallet out of your bag or pocket. Keep all personal items secure especially inside your closed jackets or coats.

IF anyone would like a “How Safe is YOUR purse” poster for your local notice board or if you have any further questions about any of the above, please contact:

Thefts of a Pedal Cycle

There have been a number of thefts in the Braintree Town during July.

The offences have targeted insecure pedal cycles in gardens/outside shops and open land.

Please consider this advice as it will reduce the opportunity of theft.

- Please do not leave your bicycle in isolated places.

- Park it safely and considerately where not to cause a danger or obstruction to others-particularly the elderly or the very young or those who may be visually impaired.

- Always lock your bicycle (through the frame) when you leave it, even if it is only a short while.

- Lock the wheels too.

- Consider the use of proper cycle anchors.

- Finally remove smaller parts which cannot be secured especially quick release saddles.

- Consider having your bike postcoded - contact Braintree Police Station

Burglary of garages in public areas.

We have had a small number of burglaries reported.  Can all owners of specialised tools take more care to lock them in SECURE places.  If in doubt as to what you have in place already why and need advice ask your Crime Prevention Officer.

Theft of metal

In recent weeks there have been occasions of copper/ electrical cable being removed, some have been on commercial vehicles.

Please , if you are the owner of such vehicles and property , take greater care to keep such property secure and out of sight when not in use.

Purse dipping.

There have been reported incidents of theft in Braintree Town Centre which occur during the day.  Can everyone take greater care of their personal items by keeping them secure in zipped/sealed pockets and keep close hold of your bags when out. Please do not leave any open bags in your trolley whilst visiting your local shops. Reduce the opportunity of such crime by being more effective by securing your items. Leave it until you reach the payment till before taking out your wallet/purse.
