Advice to Neighbourhood Watch Groups

Purse dipping:

Three offences committed in the Braintree town centre recently during the day ay large retail outlets.  Please can everyone remember the following key points to keep your personal valuables safe.
NEVER let your handbag out of your sight.
Carry it in front of you – especially if you’re walking through a shop or a town centre.
AVOID carrying large amounts of cash, and if your purse or wallet is in a bag, ensure that your bag is securely zipped up.
KEEP your purse or wallet safe at all times.

Don’t leave it in your shopping basket, on restaurant or coffee tables, or on shop counters.
Theft can happen very quickly, and you may not notice you’ve been a victim until you next have to make a purchase.

Finally if someone knocks or bumps into you, check that they have not taken your purse or wallet out of your bag or pocket.

Keep all personal items secure especially inside your closed jackets or coats.

Burglary Non Dwelling in Witham South area:

There were two offences where secure private garages were targeted between 8th October and 10th October. The first entry was gained by bending up the bottom of the garage door, nothing removed. The second was insecure and three pedal cycles and various tools removed.

Both offences likely to have been committed overnight. There have now been four offences in this ward where private garages have been targeted since 7th September.

Please lock and secure your garages.

Remember that each item could also have special identifying mark (we recommend post coding) to relate to the owner by the following methods:-

Engraving or etching is suitable for many hard surfaces and can be done using an electric engraving tool or hand engraver. This method leaves a visible and permanent mark.

Ultraviolet (UV) pens can put an invisible mark on your property, which can be seen by using a UV lamp. Only use UV marking when other methods would reduce the value of the object. The mark can fade in time, especially when exposed to sunlight, and can be washed off so you need to renew it regularly.

Punching. You can mark heavier items, such as lawn mowers, with a hammer and a set of lunches.

Keep a record of your property (sometimes photograph), paying special attention to any distinguishing marks.

Please report any offences to the police, even if minor.

Theft - and Taking Pedal Cycle.

In the past months thefts of this nature have been ongoing in towns and built up areas.  The most recent was committed in Braintree overnight between 9th October and 10th October when an insecure mountain bike was removed from the front garden.  In order to reduce the likelihood of such thefts, please can cyclists take care in looking after their pedal cycles and note the following:-

- Please do not leave your bicycle in isolated places.

- Always lock your bicycle (through the frame) when you leave it, even if it is only a short while.

- Lock the wheels too.

- Consider the use of proper cycle anchors.

- Finally remove smaller parts which cannot be secured especially quick release saddles.

- Consider having your bike post coded - contact Braintree Police Station

ARCHIVE

We need your help!

You may have read in the Newsletter that we are planning our annual Trafalgar celebration in conjunction with an

Apple Day Festival on Sunday 18th October

We have been holding Trafalgar celebrations annually to give us an opportunity to light our Trafalgar Beacon which was erected to commemorate the completion of the Meadows.

This year some of our regular helpers are involved with the  refurbishment work on the  hall toilets, and we are really in need of some new blood and more help.

Here is the list of the sorts of things we are planning with an idea of the work involved.

Can you spare us some time please? This is a free family event for the village and without new volunteers we cannot carry on. There will be an  hour or so of setting up time in the morning, with the event starting at 2.30pm through to dusk.

Beacon      Preparing the beacon with wood. Erecting safety rope fence around it. Lighting the beacon and safeguarding the public   2  people task

Pumpkins    Pumpkin carving. Encouraging and overseeing children (accompanied by adults) to carve pumpkins for Halloween lights. Can be 1 person, but preferably 2

Conker competition. Stringing conkers. Organising competition for adults and children

2  to 3 people required

Kite Flying.  Residents bring own kites – we have a few childrens kites available.

1 person task to oversee safety and encourage users. ( If no wind we have a range of family outdoor games which can be organised instead)

Refreshments. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate  with biscuits. Provided for a donation.

2 or 3 volunteers to brew, serve and tidy up.

Apple and spoon races. Organising races for adults and children. May need to set up a simple race area. 1 or 2 people needed.

Juicing demonstration  -  a “come and taste” fresh juice display. 1 to 2 person task

The longest peel game – as it suggests – one person to organise.

Bring and taste – a bring your favourite apple  recipe with enough for people to taste and then “swap” recipes  - 1 person task.

Any other apple ideas you can think of!

The more people  who volunteer the more we can do. The tasks can be shared and enjoyed. So please if you can help, email  janetaylor@whitecolne.com or

sarahadlem@whitecolne.com
