New toilets for the Village Hall

The latest phase in the Village Hall refurbishment is now under way. Having completely rebuilt the kitchen in 2008, we are now refurbishing the toilets. The existing facilities have been removed and the space reconfigured to provide new access to remodelled ladies and gents and a separate unisex disabled toilet.

This work is being financed largely from Village Hall funds but with generous help from Essex County Council, White Colne Parish Council and the Fifty Club. The building work is largely complete and it is hoped that the new facilities will be operational by the middle of November

Apple Day Celebrations

Lovely, sunny, peaceful day on the Meadows again. All of the activities were thoroughly enjoyed by the organisers and their families.

Winner of the Junior Apple & Spoon Race Alex Adlem. Adult race won by Mark Adlem using the same 'lucky apple'.

Insufficient participants to hold the annual conker competition although no shortage of conkers.

Thanks to all of the villagers who helped to put this event on. I think they all enjoyed themselves

Advice to Neighbourhood Watch Groups

Burglary - Non Dwelling across the District.

There has been a significant upward trend of these incidents in the past few days including several in the Upper Colne area committed overnight where tools have been the main target.  Please ensure you lock valuable items away and out of sight and use lights/alarms where possible.

Other incidents:

Day time residential burglaries continue to offer some concern in the Witham area as well as ATM skimming and theft of cycles generally (mountain and road bikes have proven most popular).  Please refer to previous security advice.

Please lock and secure your sheds & garages.

Remember that each item could also have special identifying mark (we recommend post coding) to relate to the owner by the following methods:-

Engraving or etching is suitable for many hard surfaces and can be done using an electric engraving tool or hand engraver. This method leaves a visible and permanent mark.

Ultraviolet (UV) pens can put an invisible mark on your property, which can be seen by using a UV lamp.

Only use UV marking when other methods would reduce the value of the object.

The mark can fade in time, especially when exposed to sunlight, and can be washed off so you need to renew it regularly.

Punching. You can mark heavier items, such as lawn mowers, with a hammer and a set of lunches.

Keep a record of your property (sometimes photograph), paying special attention to any distinguishing marks.

Please report any offences to the police, even if minor.

Not In My Neighbourhood Week 2009 (Home Office)

Essex Police are distributing 1500 leaflets across the district between 2nd and 6th Nov to increase the coverage and participation of NHW.  If you are interested in becoming involved please contact Clive Stewart on the details below.

Always look at the Essex Police website www.essex.police.uk for up to date information and crime prevention advice.

Finally why call Clive Stewart and ask for the new FREE pack of “Secure your home” literature “Keep it safe, keep it hidden” which gives advice in looking after all your personal items.

Please do not forget to help others too who may feel vulnerable so that they can become more effective in protecting their own property.

Remember the opportunity of crime reduces in a community which cares.

Advice to Neighbourhood Watch Groups

Burglary – Dwelling.

There have been a few occurrences in the Feering area in the past week. Entry was gained by forcing the lock on the UPVC front door.  There was also an attempt to remove the high value vehicle on the driveway as the offenders may have been searching for the keys to this vehicle. This may tie in with offences committed locally in recent days where motor vehicles were removed.

Why not ask for the KEYP SAFE leaflet from Clive Stewart.

Please note the following:-

Keep your keys hidden from view at all times.

Please remember that before going to bed put your car in the garage and make sure its properly secured.

Ensure all downstairs windows and doors are locked.

Double lock your UPVC doors in fact why not ask Clive Stewart for information on UPVC door security.

Think about a letterbox restrictor.

Theft of motor vehicle.

In the Helions Bumpstead area between 7th and 24th October. A secure Red Peugeot Boxer 440 Livestock carrier was removed from a car park. This may be linked to the recent increase in offences where horse boxes/ trailers have been stolen across Braintree, Maldon, Uttlesford & Witham areas.

Please remember to switch on your vehicles alarm and also use a steering wheel clamp-it will be a visual deterrent.

Other thefts in the past week:-

There have been a few occurrences of theft of fuel.

Please ask Clive Stewart for information on improving security of your domestic and business oil/diesel tanks.
Theft of copper across the district (Daytimes and Overnights).

Please keep any such items out of sight and secure in locked in garages.

ATM tampering Barclays (Early mornings/evenings):

The series of these offences continues with the most recently being in Kelvedon.

This is where skimming devices have been placed on ATM cash dispensers.

If you use a cash point, please ensure there are no suspicious looking devices on the area where you place your card.

If you suspect anything, do not use the cash point and inform the bank.

Although this is infrequent, but please be observant.

Please remember that it is important to check the cash dispenser machine before inserting your card.

Why not consider using a local retailer which offers Cash Back facilities as an alternative to receive cash?

Always look at the Essex Police website www.essex.police.uk for up to date information and crime prevention advice.

Please see website address http://www.essex.police.uk/news/n_cont.php?articleId=5092 for information on Halloween and how to down load posters (including No Trick or Treating for your home).

UPDATE 41 Colchester Road

Michael Abrahams, John Watt and Chris Pearcey attended Braintree District Council's Planning Committee meeting on 17th November where the latest plans for the 41 Colchester Road site were being discussed and decided upon.

After an excellent presentation by Michael, ably supported by John, casting severe doubts that the revised plans had changed sufficiently to address the concerns of the Parish Council, local residents and the Planning Inspector, the Committee's decision was to REFUSE permission. This decision went against the recommendation of BDC's Planning Department and I think we should thank Michael, John and our District Councillor, Gabrielle Spray for their efforts in persuading the Committee to come to the right conclusion, several of whom clearly had doubts about the proposed development but might have made a different decision otherwise.

The reason for refusal was that the proposed development by way of its scale, layout and design would be bulky and cramped, out of character with the surrounding development, to the detriment of local character, the street scene and the visual amenity of the locality. As such the proposals are contrary to policies RLP3, RLP9, RLP10, and RLP90 of the Braintree District Local Plan Review."

We hosted our second Quiz Night on Friday 16th October and are pleased to report that we had an even bigger turnout than for the one in March with 38 participants. Thanks to everybody who came - we hope they enjoyed it.

It was a nail-biting contest with 'There's a Spillage in Aisle 7' (John, Jos, Sue, Peter, Pat and Bob) narrowly defeating the 'Mixed Bunch' (Sarah Coleman et al) by a half a point! A few people did comment that their brains were aching afterwards but we weren't sure if that was from the difficulty of the questions or the alcohol!

The real winners on the evening were the '50' Club and the 'Teenage Cancer Trust'. Thanks to everyone's generosity we raised £180 and the proceeds have been split jointly between the two.

Thanks to Mark for again supplying the PA system and to Anders and Alex for their help with the raffle.

Rita and Chris Pearcey
